Camera Field of View & Crop Factor

Horizontal/vertical/diagonal FOV & 35mm-equivalent focal for any sensor.

FOV formula uses actual sensor dimensions, not just crop factor.

Horizontal Field of View
39.6 °
Normal
FOV Breakdown
Vertical FOV
27.0°
Diagonal FOV
46.8°
35mm Equivalent
50 mm
A 50mm on full-frame is the classic "nifty fifty" — roughly matches human single-eye perspective.
Did you know?
Phone cameras have a "crop factor" of roughly 6–8× — a 5.6 mm phone lens gives the same view as a ~35 mm full-frame lens.

Formula

FOV = 2 × atan(sensorSize / (2 × focal))  ·  EqFocal = focal × cropFactor

FAQs

Why does crop factor matter?
A smaller sensor sees a smaller slice of the lens image → your effective focal length increases. A 50mm on APS-C is like 75–80mm on full frame.
